Our house is placed at the end of the road and the woods are just around the corner. It is a great place for the dogs to play in. During the autumn I noticed that Tomba dug big holes in the ground and picked something up. When he was a puppy he learned that when I said: “No, filth!” he would let go of what he had in his mouth, and so he did. I took for granted that it was dirt he was carrying around. Everytime we were in the woods I had to nag, “No, filth!” I had to realize it was elkcrap he had in his mouth.

Now the spring has come and he has start digging again. And I keep nagging him: “I don´t want to kiss you now”. But the more I think about it I come to realize that the elks do not dig their crap into the ground. One time Tomba came running to me and almost put the stuff he had in his mouth upon my feet. Just like: Here you have for “No, filth”, I´m going to show you how smart I am. I tried to analyse what he had in his mouth and understood that it must be something else. I took it home and compared it to some mushrooms in a mushroombook. I found that one fitted in to the description of “false truffle”. It is recommended not to be eaten due to the size, taste or lack of knowledge.

I am fascinated by this breed and by Tomba. It always happens something new and funny with him. Now I can kiss him as usual. My little “King of truffle”, Tomba.

This is what our truffle looks like. It is about 2,5 cm long
